Thonet's bentwood chair No. 209 is heavily abstracted through a wild, imprecise brushwork. Details are lost, yet the character of the form remains. The color red enhances its expressiveness.

The work is part of the series "No Chair". The idea for the series came from the artist David Hockney's quote: "A chair is a chair is a chair." For me, the interesting question then became, when is a chair NOT a chair? The answer: as soon as it becomes merely an abstract motif. Perhaps the crowning achievement of a furniture cycle.
